The numbers

Why we keep going

These figures come from Save the Rhino International. Numbers have fallen since the 2015 peak, but at least one rhino is still killed every day, so the work is not done.

8,000+

More than 8,000 rhinos have been lost to poaching in Africa in the last decade.

1,349

Poaching in Africa peaked at 1,349 in 2015, and numbers have fallen since.

12,824

Since 2006, 12,824 rhinos have been poached in Africa.

420

In 2024, 420 rhinos were killed in South Africa, a decrease of more than 15% compared to 2023.

232

In KwaZulu-Natal, 232 rhinos were poached in 2024, a decline of nearly 30% on the previous year.

59%

Kruger National Park's rhinos have declined by 59% since 2013.

Good news

43

rhinos recorded poached in Namibia in 2025, down 53% from 2024.

Every one of those numbers is a reason this work is not finished. Fewer losses is wonderful news, and it is a reason to keep going, not to stop.
